In order to be an advocate and help raise awareness for sex and human trafficking, knowing the correct terminology plays a huge role and clears some confusion. Here are some terms that are commonly misunderstood:
Sex trafficking: "The recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for one of the following when it is induced by force, fraud, or coercion or the person performing the act is under the age of eighteen years and anything of value is given, promised to, or received, directly or indirectly by another person." (Section 16-3-2010(7) of the 1976 Code, as added by Act 258 of 2012)
Harbouring: The act of keeping a person held captive against their will
Transportation: The transporting of persons against their will/without their consent
Coercion: The practice of persuading someone to do something by using force or threats
Consent: Permission for something to happen or agreement to do something
Sex work: The practice or occupation of performing and engaging in consensual sexual activity for customers
Prostitution: The practice or occupation of engaging in sexual activity with someone for payment
